Foreign criminal record certificate
The shortest-lived document in most files, and one that follows the judicial apostille route. Obtain it last, after everything slower is already in hand.

- Describes a present state; institutions expect a recently issued certificate
A certificate from the authority keeping criminal records in a country where you have lived. Citizenship files ask for it, and so do some permit and professional recognition procedures.
⭐ Obtain it last
This document describes a present state, so institutions expect it to be recent. It ages faster than anything else in a file.
The correct sequence is: collect the slow, permanent documents first — diplomas, civil status records — and leave this one until the appointment or submission date is fixed. Obtaining it early means obtaining it twice, along with its apostille and its translation.
⚠ The judicial apostille route
Criminal records are judicial documents. Most countries certify them through a judicial authority rather than the one handling civil registry documents, and that is a different office with a different queue.
Check which authority applies before travelling to one. See which documents need an apostille.
More than one country
Where you have lived in several countries, a certificate may be needed from each. They arrive in different formats, from different authorities, with different validity conventions.
Start with the slowest country and time the others to land close to it, or the first will expire while the last is still being issued.
Everything on the certificate is translated
Entries, annotations, explanatory notes about what the record does and does not cover, and the issuing authority’s own qualifications. A certificate reduced to a single summary line in translation is incomplete.
The Turkish equivalent
A Turkish criminal record certificate is obtained electronically and needs no translation for use here. It enters the certification chain only when it travels abroad — see Turkish criminal record certificate.
What the certificate covers
Records differ in what they disclose: some cover convictions only, some include pending proceedings, and some are issued in different versions for different purposes. A certificate obtained for one purpose may not be the version a Turkish institution expects.
Ask the Turkish institution which version it needs, then ask the foreign authority for that one by name. This is a short question that avoids obtaining the document twice.
Where consulates can help
Some countries allow their nationals abroad to apply for a criminal record certificate through their consulate. Where that is possible it removes a journey, though the apostille question remains and should be settled in the same conversation.
