Independent work permit for self-employed foreigners

Without an employer to file for you, every document in the file is yours — including the company and qualification documents an employer would normally supply. That shifts the whole translation cost onto one side.

Most work permits are applied for by an employer. Where you work for yourself, there is no employer, and the file changes shape accordingly.

⭐ Everything is on your side

In an ordinary permit file the company documents come from the employer and need no translation, while the employee supplies a diploma. Here both halves are yours.

That means qualification and professional documents from abroad, and — where you have established a business in Türkiye — Turkish company documents that need no translation at all. Sorting the file into those two piles is the first thing worth doing.

Which documents come from abroad

  • Diplomas, transcripts and professional certificates
  • Employment history or references establishing experience
  • Company documents, where a business abroad is part of the picture
  • Passport, where it is not in the Latin alphabet

Each is apostilled in the country that issued it. Türkiye cannot apostille any of them, which is why this step has to be arranged before the documents travel.

Which are Turkish

A company registered in Türkiye produces Turkish documents: trade registry records, tax registration, signature circular, address records. None of these is translated.

⚠ People setting up a Turkish company and applying for a permit at the same time often pay to translate their own Turkish company documents. There is no reason to.

Duration conditions

Independent permits carry conditions about how long you must have been present or established. Those conditions are set by legislation and are revised, so confirm them with the ministry before assembling anything.

Recognition may come first

Where the work is a regulated profession, formal recognition of the qualification usually has to be settled before the permit. It is a separate procedure with its own document list and it takes the longest, so begin with it.

Where this fits

The employed route is described on work permit application, and if you are forming a Turkish company, start from setting up a company with foreign shareholders.

Working while the file is pending

An application is not a permission. Beginning to trade or to invoice clients before the permit is granted is a question about status rather than paperwork, and it is not cured by a complete file sitting with the ministry.

Ask what you may and may not do during the waiting period, and get the answer from the ministry rather than from a forum. This is the point at which self-employed applicants most often create a problem for themselves.

Order of steps

  1. Confirm the conditions with the ministry

Duration and establishment conditions are set by legislation and revised. Confirm them before collecting documents.

  2. Split the file into Turkish and foreign

Turkish company documents are never translated; foreign qualifications always are.

  3. Start recognition early if the profession is regulated

Recognition is a separate procedure and the longest item. Begin it before the permit file.

  4. Apostille foreign documents at source

Qualifications, references and foreign company documents are apostilled where they were issued.

  5. Translate the foreign half as one batch

Sending them together keeps names and institution names consistent across the file.

  6. Keep the wet-signed copies

The same documents reappear at extension and in tax and social security registration.
