Foreign death certificate
Until a death abroad is reported into Turkish records, the registry still shows the person as living and no inheritance procedure can begin. Death is one of the events multilingual forms cover.
In brief
- Document category
- Nüfus ve aile
- Apostille
- Depends on the case
- Validity
- Records a fixed event; several certified copies are usually needed
The document recording a death that occurred abroad. It is the first item in any Turkish procedure that follows from it, and the one everything else waits on.
⚠ Reporting comes first
Until the death is reported into Turkish records, the civil registry continues to show the person as living. Banks, the land registry and courts read that register, so nothing proceeds.
Reporting is generally done through a Turkish consulate in the country concerned or at a civil registry office here. See death registration and documents.
⭐ Ask for the multilingual extract
Death is one of the three events covered by standard international multilingual forms. Where the issuing registry provides one and it is accepted, neither translation nor legalisation is required.
In an inheritance file this matters twice over, because the same registry usually also holds the marriage and birth records establishing who the heirs are. One request can cover all of them.
The ordinary route
Apostille in the issuing country, sworn Turkish translation, notarial certification where required. Where a medical certificate or a coroner’s document is also needed, judicial documents take the judicial apostille route.
Order several copies
Institutions keep the copy presented to them, and an estate involves many: the civil registry, banks, the land registry, tax offices, and often a foreign authority as well.
Obtaining extra certified copies at the outset is far cheaper than returning for them one at a time.
Names must match
The name on a foreign death certificate must be reconcilable with the Turkish records of the same person. Where they differ, that has to be evidenced before the record can be updated.
Where it fits
The procedure that follows is on inheriting property in Türkiye, and the heirship document on certificate of inheritance.
Estates in two countries
Where the deceased held assets both here and abroad, each country runs its own procedure and each will want its own certified copies. A certificate obtained for a foreign estate is not automatically in the form the Turkish registry needs, and the reverse is equally true.
Ask both sides what they require before ordering, and order for both at once. The registry that issued the record can usually produce several copies in one visit, which is the whole saving.
