Foreign marriage certificate
Needed to register a marriage in Turkish records and in any file resting on marital status. Like the birth certificate, it is one of the documents a multilingual form can cover.
In brief
- Document category
- Nüfus ve aile
- Apostille
- Depends on the case
- Validity
- The event does not change; a recent extract may still be requested
Where a marriage took place abroad, this is the document that carries it into Turkish records — and until it is carried in, the Turkish civil registry does not show the marriage at all.
⚠ Registration is the point
A foreign marriage is valid where it took place, but Turkish institutions read the Turkish register. A family residence permit, a citizenship application, an inheritance procedure and a notarial act all rely on what that register shows.
So the first use of this certificate is usually registration, not the file you thought you needed it for. See registering a foreign marriage.
⭐ The multilingual form
Marriage is one of the events covered by standard international multilingual forms. Where the issuing registry provides one and the receiving institution accepts it, neither translation nor legalisation is needed.
Ask before ordering. Registries produce the ordinary certificate by default.
The ordinary route
Apostille in the issuing country, sworn Turkish translation, notarial certification where required. Türkiye cannot apostille it.
What is translated
The entry, both parties’ details, the officiant and the register particulars, together with any marginal annotations. A divorce or an annulment recorded later is often noted in the margin of the marriage entry, and it belongs in the translation.
Surnames
Surname arrangements after marriage differ between legal systems. What the foreign certificate records is not necessarily what the Turkish register will show, because Turkish rules govern the Turkish record.
Ask the registry how it will be recorded before the entry is made rather than correcting it afterwards.
If a previous marriage ended
Registration also requires that any earlier marriage shows as ended in both countries’ records. An earlier divorce abroad that was never recorded in Türkiye is the most common obstacle in this whole area — see foreign divorce decree.
Marriages at a consulate
Where a marriage was conducted at a Turkish consulate abroad, the record is a Turkish official document and reaches the civil registry through consular channels rather than through apostille and translation.
Check which of the two situations yours is before ordering anything: the difference is between a document that needs the full chain and one that needs none of it.
Frequently asked questions
It has no effect in Turkish records until it is registered here.
Often, through a multilingual marriage extract from the issuing registry.
Yes. Later events such as a divorce are frequently noted in the margin.
Not necessarily. Turkish rules govern the Turkish register; ask before the entry is made.
