Extending a work permit in Türkiye
An extension is filed by the same employer, within a window before expiry, and rests mostly on Turkish documents. Your foreign qualifications were translated once and do not need translating again.
In brief
- Estimated time
- Set by the ministry once the file is complete
- Destination country
- Türkiye
An extension continues an existing permit with the same employer. It is a lighter file than the first application, and knowing why saves both time and money.
⭐ Your qualifications do not change
The diploma you had apostilled and translated for the first application is the same diploma. Translations do not expire, and neither does an apostille placed on a document.
Keep the wet-signed copies from the original file. At extension they are simply reused.
What is actually re-examined
Whether the employment still exists, whether it is still on the terms declared, and whether the employer’s registrations are current. All of that is evidenced from Turkish records — payroll, social security, tax and trade registry — and none of it is translated.
⚠ Timing is the real risk
Extension applications are made within a defined window before the current permit expires. Applying outside it can mean the file is treated as a new application rather than an extension, with the document list that follows from that.
The window is set by legislation and is revised, so take the current dates from the ministry. Put the date in a calendar the moment the permit is granted; it arrives sooner than anyone expects.
If something changed
A different role, a different location, a different employer or a change in the terms of employment may take the file out of the extension route entirely. A change of employer certainly does — a permit is tied to the employer that applied for it.
Where that happens your foreign documents are needed again, which is the practical reason to keep them rather than an abstract one.
Residence follows the permit
A work permit generally carries residence rights, so the two do not run on separate tracks. But their document lists differ, and a change on one side is felt on the other.
Where this fits
The first application is described on work permit application, and the equivalent question on the residence side is covered on renewing a residence permit.
The gap between permits
Where an application is filed in time but decided after the old permit has expired, your position during that gap follows rules set by legislation rather than by common sense. Confirm what your status is in that interval and whether you may continue working, because the answer determines whether a trip abroad in that period is sensible.
Travel is the usual complication: leaving the country while a file is pending can be straightforward or can be the thing that undoes it, depending on the category.
Order of steps
-
Diary the expiry date
Record it the day the permit is granted, and work backwards from the window the ministry defines.
-
Confirm the application window
It is set by legislation and revised. Applying outside it can turn an extension into a new application.
-
Reuse the qualification translations
Diplomas and certificates have not changed; their apostilles and translations remain usable.
-
Check the employer’s registrations
Trade registry, tax and social security records must be current. These are Turkish and need no translation.
-
Declare changes honestly
A changed role, location or employer may move the file out of the extension route. Establish that before filing.
-
Keep the residence side aligned
Residence rights follow the permit, but the document lists differ. Check both.
