Renewing a residence permit in Türkiye

People renewing a permit often prepare the whole file again from scratch, translating documents they already had translated. In most cases that is unnecessary work.

⭐ What a renewal actually re-examines

The authority is checking whether the conditions that justified your permit still hold. So the documents that must be current are the ones that describe a present situation: where you live, how you support yourself, and whether you are insured.

Documents describing a fixed past fact — a birth, a marriage, a diploma — have not changed and neither have their translations.

Translations do not expire

There is no expiry date on a translation. What ages is the underlying document. A marriage certificate translation from two years ago still describes the same marriage; a bank statement translation from two years ago describes a balance nobody will now look at.

Keep the wet-signed copies from your first application. At renewal they are worth real money.

What has to be fresh

• Income evidence and bank documents
• Health insurance, covering the new permit period
• Accommodation evidence, if you have moved
• Passport details, if you have renewed your passport

Of these, only foreign-issued documents go through translation. A Turkish insurance policy, a Turkish rental contract and your address registration are Turkish documents and are submitted as they are.

⚠ Timing

Renewal applications open within a defined window before the current permit expires, and applying too early is refused rather than held. Confirm the window with the authority before you begin collecting documents, because the short-lived ones start ageing the moment you obtain them.

If your circumstances changed

A new job, a marriage, a divorce or a new address can move you into a different permit category. That is not a renewal but a new application, with a different document list.

Where the change happened abroad — a marriage or divorce registered in another country — the corresponding record needs apostille in that country and then translation here.

Passport changes

If you renewed your passport, the number on your permit no longer matches. Bring both the old and the new passport where you still hold the old one, since the entry stamps that prove your residence history are in it.
