First application or extension: what changes
The two are not the same file. A first application is made from outside or on an entry visa and proves you qualify; an extension proves you still qualify. That difference decides which documents you must obtain abroad.
In brief
- Estimated time
- Depends on appointment availability
- Destination country
- Türkiye
People use “application” and “extension” interchangeably, but for document preparation they are different exercises with different costs.
⭐ The practical difference
A first application asks you to prove you qualify. Much of that proof comes from your home country: civil status records, criminal record certificates, qualifications, income.
An extension asks you to prove you still qualify. Most of that proof is generated in Türkiye — your address registration, your Turkish insurance policy, your Turkish employment or bank records.
So the translation cost is heavily concentrated in the first file, and drops sharply afterwards.
Why this matters before you travel
Foreign documents can only be apostilled in the country that issued them. Once you are in Türkiye, obtaining an apostille on a home-country document means posting it back, waiting, and posting it forward again.
⚠ Collect and apostille everything you might need before you leave. It costs little to obtain one document more than you need and a great deal to obtain one document less.
Which documents to over-collect
- Birth certificate, in multilingual form if the registry can issue one
- Marriage or divorce record, if either applies
- Criminal record certificate
- Diploma and transcript, if you may work or study
These appear across residence, work permit, citizenship and civil registry files. Obtained once and apostilled once, they serve all of them.
The extension file
At extension the questions narrow to insurance, accommodation, income and continuity of stay. Foreign documents appear only where your situation involves them — an income source abroad, for instance.
⚠ Do not assume the category carries over
A change of purpose — from student to employee, from tourism to family — is not an extension even if your current permit has not expired. It is a fresh application under a different category, and the document list changes with it.
Confirm which of the two you are making with the authority before preparing anything, because preparing the wrong file wastes the short-lived documents in it.
The one document worth obtaining twice
Criminal record certificates have the shortest useful life of anything in a first application, and they are also the hardest to obtain once you have left the country. If your timeline is uncertain, obtaining one early and a second one closer to the appointment is usually cheaper than posting a document abroad and waiting for it to come back apostilled.
Where this fits
Before collecting civil status documents abroad, read multilingual civil status extracts. What you can carry over into a later file is on renewing a residence permit.
Order of steps
-
Establish which file you are making
Ask the authority whether your case is an extension or a fresh application in a new category. The document list follows from the answer.
-
For a first application, collect abroad
Obtain civil status, criminal record and qualification documents in your home country and have them apostilled there.
-
Ask about multilingual forms
Civil status records issued as multilingual extracts can avoid translation and legalisation entirely where accepted.
-
For an extension, work from Turkish documents
Address registration, insurance and Turkish income records need no translation.
-
Reuse what you already have
Wet-signed translations of unchanged documents remain usable; keep them filed rather than reordering.
-
Check the timing rules for each
First applications and extensions have different timing constraints. Confirm both with the authority.
Frequently asked questions
Usually yes, because most of its evidence is generated in Türkiye and needs no translation.
Civil status records, criminal record certificate and qualifications, all apostilled before you travel.
Only by sending the document back to the issuing country. Türkiye cannot apostille it.
That is a fresh application in a new category, not an extension.
Within reason, yes. One document too many is cheap; one too few is expensive.
